ONE MONTH TO GO UNTIL THE MCGRATH WOLLONGONG RUNNING FESTIVAL

For immediate release: 2 May 2024

Runners are counting down the days until the McGrath Wollongong Running Festival on Sunday 2 June. With the event one month away, registrants across all events are well underway in training to reach their goals on the day. 2,000 people are expected to register, making this the largest running event in the region.

Wollongong, NSW: The 2024 McGrath Wollongong Running Festival is one month away, and registered runners are already preparing for the event on Sunday 2 June. Races include the Peoplecare 2km Kids Fun Run, SAVVY Mark Scott 5km, Illawarra Credit Union 10km and Ericom Half Marathon. The event is drawing in registrants of varied running abilities who will all have the opportunity to celebrate their shared love of running when they compete on the day.

First-time runner Shirley Agostinho is a shining example of how registrants are encouraged to challenge themselves and try something new irrespective of their running experience. Shirley signed up to run in the SAVVY Mark Scott 5km race after discovering the joy of running in her fifties through recreational and allied health service provider SAVVY.

“I didn’t think I could ever enter this event, but through the SAVVY Learn to Run Program I’ve been able to run continuously for 5km! It’s really motivated me to give it a go,” Shirley said.

81-year-old running veteran Barbara Maxwell, has fit the Illawarra Credit Union 10km event into her busy running calendar. Barbara is an unstoppable force and her passion for running is an inspiration to everyone running alongside her. She aims to run the 10km event in under 75 minutes.

“I track my runs based on how I feel, rather than using a watch. I go to these running events to reach my goals, but half the fun is cheering on the other runners. The community spirit is always contagious,” Barbara said.

Experienced local runner Dave Archer is registered to run in the Ericom Half Marathon. He is training for the event by following a strict run program. Dave is using this event as preparation in the lead up to the Gold Coast Marathon where he will be running both the Half Marathon and Marathon events.

“I am used to travelling around the country to compete in running events, but I love that the McGrath Wollongong Running Festival is right on my doorstep and offers events for more serious and competitive runners,” Dave said.

The 2024 McGrath Wollongong Running Festival is set to be an inclusive, empowering and community-focused event that will bring competitive and recreational runners together, and will showcase our Wollongong area to the wider running community.
